Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal Team Working to Power the NExt-Gen NASA Supercomputer

Earlier this year, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced the availability of its , , an advanced system designed to support a new generation of missions and research projects. Athena will provide the computational power necessary to simulate rocket launches, design next-generation aircraft and spacecraft, train large-scale artificial intelligence foundation models and analyze massive datasets to uncover new scientific insights. This high-performance computing (HPC) system – housed at NASA’s Ames Research Center – will help NASA scientists, engineers and researchers overcome complex challenges in space, aeronautics and science while lowering operational costs and improving energy efficiency.

Our Team Behind this Mission

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal team, comprised of HPC-focused architects, system administrators and application subject matter experts, was responsible for leading the development and implementation of a new site architecture as well as managing the transition and integration into NASA’s operational environment. Extensive planning, coordination and technical innovation were required to successfully guide the system through design, integration testing and rollout phases. This initiative relied heavily on collaboration across multiple organizations, such as infrastructure, applications, cybersecurity, operations and vendor partners – with the team focused on balancing system stability, user adoption and performance optimization while minimizing disruption to ongoing scientific workloads. Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal is currently providing continuous 24/7/365 operational support for Athena HPC.

“The NASA Ames Research Center conducts critical research and development for the technologies that make NASA missions possible. We are proud to have worked hand-in-hand with our customer to help bring their vision for this transformational platform to life,â€ said Eric Velte, Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal Chief Technology Officer.

Interesting facts about NASA’s newest supercomputer include:

  • Athena surpasses the capabilities of its predecessors, Aitken, Electra and Pleiades, in both power and efficiency, delivering over 20 petaflops of peak performance – a measurement of the number of calculations it can make per second – all while reducing the agency’s supercomputing utility costs.
  • The system includes 1,024 nodes across four racks, delivering 262,144 CPU cores. For perspective, this four-rack cluster has as many cores as 16,000 to 22,000 modern laptops combined.
  • The list ranks high-performance computing systems used for advanced scientific and engineering applications worldwide; Athena currently holds the 116th spot.
  • Athena was named after the Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare and was selected through a contest held last year among NASA’s High-End Computing Capability workforce – which was chosen because she is the half-sister of Artemis (the agency’s lunar exploration program).

Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal selected by NOAA to provide AI-enabled financial management

Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal subsidiary Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal Data Network Technologies LLC, has been selected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to execute the Financial Management Data System (FMDS) Technical Support Services contract. This work builds upon the longstanding partnership between Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal and NOAA.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal’s Advanced Analytics Platform, A2P, is the framework for NOAA’s FMDS program. FMDS is an operational system that enables NOAA financial analysts to perform financial management including budget planning, variance analysis & plan adjustments. One key feature of the FMDS tool is that it uses AI/ML to examine data from prior spending cycles to predict future spending needs. The custom application of this solution for NOAA demonstrates an effective application where AI and data analytics are helping a government agency achieve its goals with smarter financial management methods.

‘Single Pane of Glass’ View and AI-Enabled Forecasting

  • FMDS leverages a commercially developed custom AI module that can make sense of the agency’s complex financial data patterns and pre-process it in ways that help personnel identify spending behaviors for individual contracts to predict how much of their budget could potentially be left unused on each contract.
  • The program gives financial leaders greater visibility into the agency’s finances by breaking down silos to bring data from disparate systems into a “single pane of glassâ€, to give them the data they need at their fingertips.
  • The system’s analytics provide an integrated view of timely data that enables better decision-making through improved visibility into past financial performance against plan as well as AI-enabled forecasts into future spending behavior.

Creating Efficiencies Through Cost Savings

In the first couple of years of deployment, the system has identified tens of millions of dollars that had not yet been allocated due to complex planning practices. This tool has been so impactful that NOAA rolled it out to its entire budget community after the initial deployment with its National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS) team. FMDS is based on commercial software that can be tailored to the unique needs of different agencies.

“This contract award underscores NOAA’s trust in our team to deliver innovative, reliable solutions like AI analytics for financial management,â€ said Clay Morad, vice president at Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal.

“FMDS presents an example of how an agency can evolve from an operating model focused on manually pulling data from various sources to one that gives leadership real-time visibility and vision into that data, and by extension, into the agency’s contracts and acquisitions,â€ said Theresa Cauble, Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal senior director of solutions architecture.

This contract is the first task order that Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal has won on the NOAA Mission IT Services (NMITS) acquisition vehicle. Â鶹ÊÓƵ Federal will also provide front-line technical services to users while continuing to successfully implement this system across the agency. As a trusted partner, we look forward to advancing NOAA’s critical mission to better understand Earth’s climate and weather systems.
